Seal of the Khan

The unmistakable seal of the Khan is discernible on the correspondence authored by Güyük Khan and addressed to Pope Innocent IV, presently archived within the Vatican Secret Archives. This letter, composed in the concluding days of Jumada II 644 of the Hijra calendar, corresponding to November 1246, prompts the inference that the said seal was originally crafted for Genghis Khan, the esteemed grandfather of Güyük Khan, considering the customary succession of such seals from one Khan to another.

Translation of the scripts on the seal of the Khan.

"Under the Power of the Eternal Heaven, if the Decree of the Oceanic Khan of the Great Mongol Nation reaches people both subject or belligerent, let them revere, let them fear"

Partial translation of the Güyük Khan’s letter to Pope Innocent IV.

"You must say with a sincere heart: "We will be your subjects; we will give you our strength". You must in person come with your kings, all together, without exception, to render us service and pay us homage. Only then will we acknowledge your submission. And if you do not follow the order of God, and go against our orders, we will know you as our enemy."

4. Genghis Khan’s family coats of arms

In accordance with tradition, households historically utilized coats of arms to distinguish their livestock and property. Notably, the heraldic emblem of the esteemed Genghis Khan was unearthed on a coin, minted in the city of Samarqand in the year 1221.

5. Decree

Translation of the decree.

“By the divine decree of eternal heaven, entrusted custodians of a golden lineage, we issue this edict.

In an act of profound compassion, inspired by a noble and altruistic purpose, the executor of this deed has willingly submitted. It is incumbent upon all to hold this act in reverence and deep regard.

May the seeds sown through this benevolent action thrive, yielding abundant fruit, serving as a lasting testament to your exemplary generosity.

Witness my signature and seal.”
